​Kate Bright is a music teacher at Lincoln Charter School in York, PA, where she teaches approximately 700 kindergarten through fifth grade students. She is past-president of the Greater Baltimore Area Orff Chapter and the Philadelphia Area Orff Chapter, and has presented at the American Orff Schulwerk Association National Conference. In 2015, she received the Spotlight Award from the American Center for Elemental Music and Movement. She currently serves on the board of both ACEMM and the Harrisburg Area Contra Dance Association.

Kelly Takunda-Orphan

Kelly Takunda Orphan loves to sing, drum and dance! As a vocalist, percussionist, songwriter and dancer, Kelly has both taught and performed music around the world. She was raised in a family of mixed-heritage musicians in the Bay Area, sang in her church choir, studied piano, voice and percussion and toured with Babatunde Olatunji before moving to Africa and discovering her deep-rooted passion for music and dance in Zimbabwe. Kelly took a year-long course in Ethnomusicology at the University of Zimbabwe in 1994. 

Kelly also holds a BA from San Jose State University in Creative Arts with an emphasis on world music and also has a minor in music. She completed the Orff Schulwerk certification program in 2001 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. She has taught music to children and adults for over 20 years, and has taught at various organizations such as  NCAOSA (Northern California American Orff Schulwerk), Oakland Youth Chorus, Go Girls!, Born To Drum and more.  

Since 1995, Kelly has worked as a music specialist in Richmond, San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland public and private schools. In 1997, Kelly began to build a music program at Park Day School where she is currently teaches music to K-5 students, directs two choirs and leads a percussion ensemble. For the past decade, Kelly has been leading her own 10-peice world music ensemble, The KTO Project and she performs in various Bay Area music and dance groups. She is currently in collaboration with Evie Ladin and her project, Motor, which is a unique all female ensemble of artists who sing, play body music and dance.

Paul Cribari

Paul Cribari is an Orff Schulwerk teacher in the Cherry Creek School District in Colorado. There, he teaches kindergarten through fifth grade, conducts the school choir and leads the Advanced Percussion Ensemble. Paul received his Master of Arts in Orff Schulwerk from the University of St. Thomas, and his Doctorate in Music Education from Boston University. In addition to his work with children Dr. Cribari teaches levels I, II, and III of Orff Schulwerk at Southern Methodist University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the San Francisco International Orff Schulwerk Course. Dr. Cribari is also a regular clinician for local chapters of the AOSA. He received his Orff certification at the University of St. Thomas and has presented sessions at state and local conferences as well as numerous National Conferences of the AOSA. IOSA board members who’ve attended Paul’s national AOSA workshops, are so very excited to have this friendly, engaging, on-the-frontline-facilitator present at our October Professional Development Days! Tim Wiegand

Tim Wiegand graduated from Syracuse University with a BA in Music Education, and received his Masters Degree with an "emphasis in Orff-Schulwerk" from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  Tim has been teaching Elementary General Music in the Clark County School District for over 20 years and is a regular presenter for school district staff developments.  Tim directed performance groups at the 2002 AOSA (American Orff-Schulwerk Association) Conference. In 2004, 2005, 2010, 2013, and 2015 Tim also presented sessions at the AOSA  National Conference.  Tim has been presenting Orff workshops all over the US and Canada since 2004.  Being a percussionist, the field of Orff-Schulwerk has been a natural fit for Tim.

October 6th: David Gluck offered an all day workshop entitled Rhythm Journey: An Exploration into the Fascinating World of Rhythm with your Students. David will shed insight on innovative ways to teach your students how to perform music with more rhythmic integrity.  Using Orff instruments is an ideal means to do this!  The workshop will be hands-on and will include such topics and activities as:
  • How to use geometric shapes to teach rhythm
  • How to use the metronome in creative and effective ways
  • Teaching the art of subdividing: from small to large note values
  • Teaching rythm from both a physical and mental perspective
  • Teaching students how to count (internally and externally)
  • Understanding and internalizing syncopated rhythms (down/up, on/off)
  • Using spoken language to teach the essence of rhythm

 ​October 7th: Dr. Nicole Molumby presented a Dalcroze-Based workshop which will focus on the teaching methods of Emile Jacque Dalcroze, a Swiss composer, music educator and music theorist whose method of teaching rhythm through movement known as Eurhythmics.  In the morning, Dr. Molumby will lead simple movement activities that emphasize the three Eurhythmic principles of time, space, and energy.  Throughout the workshop she will present lessons and activities that incorporate Eurhythmics into learning and performing recorder.  At the end of the day, participants will create their own movement-based activities using Orff instruments and recorders that culminate in a final workshop performance!   ​ ​

Treasures of Literacy: Addressing Music Concepts through Movement, Poetry and Literature
.

Invite students to follow literacy trails through the use of favorite children's literature titles. Hands-on activities and music making experiences will bring stories to life through the pages of participation. Floor games, movement opportunities and technology suggestions are included as lifelong characters and storybook friends introduce the music making joy of the Orff process.
